Many of us might think zhushing things up in your home makes it more appealing to buyers – but there are makeover traps that could end in tears all homeowners should know about.

Of course giving a room a lick of paint to freshen things up will make a home more desirable to a buyer – especially if it’s neutral. But digging up the lawn to replace it with decking, or turning your bathroom into a wetroom, might actually be the turn-offs, reports Hull Live.

It might be beneficial to think of rectifying these off-putting problems before you put your house on the market – and be aware there are a number of features that do deter potential buyers. Here are some of the top turn-offs buyers have said would put them off buying a house.

1. Textured walls and ceilings

“Popcorn” or textured ceilings were once all the rage – all our grandparents have those swirly patterns that were “once in fashion” – but removing them can be a slow and messy process, which a house viewer will be aware of, as well as the nuisance and cost to them of smoothing things over.

2. No bath

Removing the bath from the bathroom and turning it into a wet room isn’t always appealing – showers are a freshen-up necessity but baths are for relaxing and taking that well-needed self care. They’re also a lot easier for washing down grubby kids and pets.

3. Coloured bathroom suite

A classic white suite will sell itself more easily to a viewer than a dated avocado or burgundy number, even if you like to think of it as quirky or retro. Maybe this one is a much needed change.

4. Hobby rooms

While a home gym, cinema or craft room might be the perfect fit for your family, it is often hard for potential buyers to picture themselves in the space – it’s usually better to clear the room and allow its potential to shine through.

5. All decked out

Too much decking in the garden can rob the space of its natural appeal. Vast expanses of wood can look bland, it limits the use of the garden area and needs to be cleaned and cared for; too small a decked area, on the other hand, will be viewed as impractical for things like entertaining.

6. Artificial turf

You might think you are giving a potential owner an easy way out of one of the biggest gardening chores – mowing the lawn – but fake grass can fade, it can get hot in the sun and it is not natural, so wildlife does not benefit from its properties.

7. Statement tiles

Adopting a bold colour or pattern of tiling in any main rooms in your home could prove off-putting for a buyer – kitchens and bathrooms decked out in wild shades or even with tiles arranged in unusual layouts will deter people, clean, white designs are key.

8. Bold walls

Dramatic paint choices on walls and ceilings can be off-putting too. Dark grey walls, too, have been cited as among the least attractive features to encounter in a house, despite being championed by celebrities and social media stars while showing off their pads in recent times.

9. Bi-fold doors

While there has been a huge surge in having bi-fold doors installed in recent years, to blend indoor and outdoor spaces virtually seamlessly, they may need to concertina back into your home and limit the space there; they don’t have a raised threshold so, if not installed correctly, water could be blown indoors, and each folding pane of glass has its own frame, which does slightly obscure the view.

Here are some top-tips on how you can make your home buyer ready.

Ditch the clutter

No one wants to see piles of read magazines and newspapers piled up in the corner of the lounge, or your grungy make-up strewn across the dressing table in your bedroom and they definitely don’t want to see a fridge and kitchen cupboards full of your little-ones drawings.

Grime time

Grimy windows, loos that are less than fresh and a sink full of dirty pots won’t win favour with a viewer, nor will signs of moulds or damp anywhere in the property.

Freshen up

Clean those carpets and marks on flooring before you invite anyone in, light a candle or spray a little air freshener too.

Kerb appeal

Keep the garden neat and mow the lawn, invest in a few tubs of colourful plants and paint your front door and garden fence if it has seen better days.
