Is Priti Patel’s job in peril? Home Secretary’s supporters ‘on alert for an attempt by Gove to make a bid for her job’ after his high-profile role in running Homes for Ukraine scheme
- Priti Patel is wary of Michael Gove attempting to swipe the Home Office job
- Mr Gove is currently working on the ‘Homes for Ukraine’ scheme with Patel
- He was said to have been coveting the job according to a Patel ally
Supports of Home Secretary Priti Patel say they are on alert for an attempt by Michael Gove to make a bid for her job, following his high-profile role in running the new sponsorship scheme for Britons to offer homes to Ukrainian refugees in return for £350 per month.
One ally of Ms Patel claimed that Mr Gove had been ‘going around saying that he wanted to be Home Secretary and then Chancellor’, and that Priti was ‘being squeezed out in a pincer movement with Ben [Wallace, Defence Secretary]’.

A Whitehall source said of the Levelling Up Secretary, whose responsibility includes policies on preserving the Union: ‘Michael’s last attempt to brief himself a promotion saw him demoted to local government.
‘If he keeps on at this rate he will be at the Welsh Office before the end of summer.’
Mr Gove was first accused last year of ‘muscling in’ on Ms Patel’s patch after convening meetings on the Government’s response to the resettlement of refugees from Afghanistan.
However, a source close to Mr Gove said last night: ‘That is total rubbish. Michael and Priti have been working very closely on the refugee crisis, talking virtually every day.’
