The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman
Believe me, it’s better to produce the balance-sheet of your own life than that of the grain market. — Seneca, On the Brevity of Life, 18.3b
This quote is the reason I left corporate America and the United States. I moved to South Korea in December 2015. What was I doing in Global Procurement clicking buttons on a computer screen. All the while without being able to fully understand my thoughts, actions, and own words. I left on a mission to be my own CEO.
Wherever you go there you Jon Kabat-Zinn
Of course I didn’t need to travel on the outside to “find” myself. The best travel I have found has been 10 days of silence at Vipassana Meditation Retreats. Definitely not all sunshine and rainbows and the path is solitary. Not for everyone, but it has been my path. I look back to friends and coworkers in my past. Sometimes I question if this path is for me. At this time, I remember this quote.
The left hand path should never be taken. Yet, once taken, it should always be finished. -Unknown
Do not misunderstand me. Understanding the grain market at the deepest level might be your calling. You can also make the argument that the 9–5 is used to better understand yourself. Not to mention you can enjoy the weekend. My path is not virtuous. It is not noble. The personal development path is the most selfish path of all, if you do it right.
