Two sons told of their horror at finding their dad dead in his Staffordshire home. The pair became worried after not hearing from ‘alcohol-dependent’ Joseph Dobson and decided to visit him.
They were forced to smash their way into his flat and used a patio chair to break a window. But they were left heartbroken after finding their 47-year-old father was dead, StokeonTrentLive reports.
An inquest into Mr Dobson’s death heard the labourer killed himself. His sons found him hanged on February 2.

Son Matthew Dobson said his dad was ‘very down’ and had recently split from his partner. Family raised the alarm with police after smashing their way into his home in Stoneyfields Court, Newcastle-under-Lyme.
In a statement, Matthew said: “He had been given the flat by the council. I had a good relationship with my dad. He was dependent on alcohol. He had recently separated from his partner. My dad was very down.
“He came to my home address to use the internet. He was there for about 45 minutes. Nothing appeared any different in his mood. He seemed completely normal. The next day I heard from him – he sent me a Snapchat asking what I was up to. I didn’t hear from him for the rest of the week.”
An inquest ruled Joseph committed suicide. The inquest heard the labourer was ‘dependent on alcohol’ and had not coped well with the recent breakdown of his relationship.
Matthew, his brother, their cousin, and a friend later went to the address and raised the alarm with police. But when the police did not arrive quickly enough they smashed their way inside. Matthew added: “I saw my dad hanging. I waited for the police.”
Delivering his suicide verdict, North Staffordshire assistant coroner Sukhdev Garcha said: “He died of hanging. His mood was low. He had separated from his partner of three years. He had not been coping as a result of the separation. His family had had no contact with him for a couple of days.”
