The internet, especially YouTube, is full of people sharing their “Fat to Fit” journeys. They proudly share their “Before” and “After” body pictures and are indeed an inspiration for many. Losing those extra kilos, not only makes one look younger than their age, but also unlocks an unknown level of agility in the body. Unburdened, the muscles spring to life.
But today the world is facing a different kind of obesity, which has been caused due to consumerism. And it is very debilitating. Its burden on life is felt years and years on end, but remains unaddressed, as it is unseen. The obesity due to consumerism, takes away the very agility of life.
Let me explain how-
Overtime as you increase your “Standards of Living”, you tend to become more and more risk-averse. As for all the bills you pay, you cannot afford to lose your job or miss the next promotion. The spirit of adventurism that might have been in youth, gives way to necessity of well-paying but often uninspiring jobs. Initially, you dread Mondays (the infamous ‘Monday Blues’) or the end of a vacation. Soon, you no longer have time for your hobbies, friends or even health. Soo many working-class professionals, across the world, face some kind of health issue. Athleticism, if you had once, becomes a thing of past and only resides in nostalgia brought forward by your college/school photos. That trip you wanted to make, gets procrastinated indefinitely.
Often, middle-aged men and women are accused of being boring. It is, because their life is indeed uneventful. Its an endless cycle of waking up, doing repetitive tasks, and then going to bed at night, years and years on end.
Soon, the glow of youth gives way to wrinkles of old age. And one day, on looking into the mirror, you suddenly confront the mortality of your existence. All that baggage of unfulfilled aspirations and dreams then start to haunt you, as you realize that time is running out (often called the ‘Midlife crisis’).
What’s the solution?
According to me, living below your means, i.e., a minimalist lifestyle, is the best way forward.
The true essence of a minimalist lifestyle is determining what provides us the most value in life and removing everything that is simply excess. It works on the concept that less is more and living with fewer resources whether in terms of a house or possession. You make room and time in your life for the things that you love and eliminate everything that distracts you from them.
Living frugally and without those bills, allow you to-
1. To have experiences rather than things.
2. To live a life of freedom rather than ‘following a script’.
3. To live light, with mobility and having less to lose.
4. To find time for things that matter, such as pursuing hobbies and indulging in activities that relax you.
5. To have a clearer mind and less stress.
6. To save money quickly.
Minimalism, ultimately leads to a lifetime of precious memories, because you have more time and money than ever. Additionally, if you hate your job or simply want to do a career change, penning that resignation letter becomes an easier task.
