Once upon a time when products were endorsed on television, many were legitimately tested for durability, authenticity and reliability. Not all, of course.
A former co-worker of mine who had a chiseled body back in his youth shared his story. He was jogging on the beach in Southern California when an infomercial was being filmed. His jogging path was intercepted and a man asked him to join the shoot. He was a gym head at the time and pulling him away from exercising was a bad idea. He said he damn near trampled the solicitor.
After his jog, he returned to the location and they were still there. He was asked to jump on to their Bowflex and advertise for them. He did as he was asked. The craziest part is he had never even heard of the piece of equipment much less used it. He got paid handsomely to lie.
Another story that comes to mind is for a cloth that was purported to clean surfaces without much effort. The infomercial was so convincing in its heyday. It was later revealed that the cloth was extremely ineffective. This revelation was followed by the demise of ShamWow.
There were many other commercials and infomercials that made grand promises. After buying and using the product, it was quickly proven that the information was exaggerated, which is the kindest way of saying, a downright lie.
Fast forward to now when an effortless online search can return tons of reviews, which helps with the decision making process to buy or not.
Whether the reviews are based in reality or in the imagination of the writer we often do not know. The most compelling story leads the way.
So, how can we stamp out the fakes when it comes to choosing products? We cannot, until we try it for ourselves.
So many people with platforms peddle a product and it is abundantly clear that they have not been a consumer of said product.
There is one fellow with a super huge following on Youtube and his thumbnail always has random dollar values. i.e. make $4034.58 listening to Spotify.
When you dive into the video, the language makes it obvious that caution should be your sidekick.
‘Just do it’, ‘who is going to know’, ‘I’m already rich’ etc. If you are a person with discernment, it may be relatively obvious that proceeding with care, if at all, is the only way forward.
This is how I have approached the affiliate marketing space… With cautious optimism. Before promoting anything, I will continue to dissect, question, try, listen, review then repeat before becoming a believer.
There are too many new age cut and paste people out here to approach this arena in any other way.
