A mother who torched her home with children inside after an argument with her estranged husband has been allowed to walk free from court in an “exceptional” ruling.
Akbibi McMillan, 51, set fire to her kitchen and dining room in the property in Motherwell, Lanarkshire, after the argument over the phone in 2020.
A neighbour used a ladder to rescue her and an eight-year-old boy from an upstairs window. McMillan was left with fractures to her back and ribs after she fell attempting to flee the flames she had ignited. Two girls who were also inside escaped uninjured.
After an investigation experts concluded the blaze had been started deliberately and she was charged.
McMillan pleaded not guilty at Hamilton sheriff court but a jury convicted
