Thierry Garnier enters the kitchen design studio of B&Q’s new store in Colchester and decides now is the time to unleash his Gallic charm.

“What do you like? You want the wooden top? You like ’zis colour?” he asks, tapping a kitchen cabinet. “Show us the midnight blue for this gentleman! Garnier, chief executive of the home improvement conglomerate Kingfisher — which owns the B&Q and Screwfix chains in the UK, as well as Castorama and Brico Dépôt in France — has had plenty to feel chipper about since joining in 2019.
