Four years ago, Shaun and Rachel Greetham bought a cottage in Ludlow, Shropshire. “I inherited some money and we wanted to invest it because it wasn’t doing anything in the bank,” said Rachel, 48. “We didn’t want to spend it on a holiday or cars so bought a property with a view to renting it out.”
The couple’s aim was to do up the 17th-century cottage and use the income generated from hosting guests to cover their mortgage initially and eventually to help in their retirement. So far it’s all going to plan.
The couple, who run a construction and landscaping business, paid a £30,000 deposit for grade-II listed Charlie’s Cottage and spent £40,000 on refurbishments, including a kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms and carpets.
