This question is what I hear the most often. What is my secret? How did I lose all the weight and get my health on track?
It’s not an easy answer.
It’s not an easy process.
If you want a fast solution to lose weight, you’re going to be out of luck. So many years of trying and I can tell you that only one thing works…Your calories in must be less than your calories out, it’s math, that’s all.
I used My Fitness Pal to track my weight and my food for a long time. Here is my weight journey. It started in March 2018. Notice the ups and downs and how long it took (four years).

When you begin to add a daily consistency and commitment to your journey is when you succeed. You need patience, grace for yourself, and a drive to care about yourself each and every day. You have to believe you’re worth it.
If you have excuses at this point, pause, check them. Ask yourself what if this wasn’t an excuse what would you do differently? There is NO room for excuses.
Let me tell you what I learned about seeking weight loss. HINT: It’s not actually about your weight!! Your weight is an outcome of your mental health and your choices.
So, I began losing weight when:
- I ate actual food that I cook from the fresh parts of the grocery store, don’t use anything that comes from a package. Helpful hint, shop around the store, not through the aisles. Buy from the vegetables, meat, dairy and bread sections around the store. I got my weekly shopping down to $100. That is 7 days x 3 meals plus snacks.
- Don’t be afraid of carbs, don’t follow fad diets. You need protein, carbs and fats to make your body work. It’s fuel. Once you get that deeply into your consciousness you begin to see what you need. We can enjoy food for sure…there are lots of ways to do this but the entire point of food is fuel.
- I stopped drinking alcohol. Yes, I know, you don’t want to. However, this is magical, the weight came off easier when I stopped. Alcohol is a challenge. Socially you are treated differently when you quit. There is a stigma. It’s everywhere at social events etc. To be honest, COVID helped with this as I wasn’t going out to events, it would have been harder if I didn’t have that support. It was hard to put boundaries around interactions that contained mostly alcohol, but it was the right thing to do. My skin, my inflammation and my joints all thank me now. I look and feel like a new woman, and it’s mostly due to the removal of this toxin.
- I removed all other toxins from my body. I use natual skin products now that dont’ have chemicals in them. It’s amazing what we put on our body without thinking. Our skin is our biggest organ and what we put on it goes into our body. These chemicals were causing inflammation which causes weight gain.
- I did enough therapy that I now understand Why I was eating poorly — I learned that I self sabotage and that I had coping mechanisms to soothe my inner pain. The irony was I was actually undereating…more to come on this. I had to solve the inner pain issue. If I didn’t I would battle this forever….therapy rocks!
- I had to unravel my toxic relationship with money that was fueling my overeating by working with a money coach. My scarcity mentality and fear caused stress that made my body retain all the bad stuff as I emotionally overate by sneaking through drive thrus for snacks and eating all the candy from the dollar store aisles.
- I had to start loving myself and doing my inner child work, I was hurting and that needed attention. Trauma in our lives hurts our bodies. Our bodies keep score! (great book by that title, check it out).
- I had to start working out after 20 years of being a couch potato. I didn’t want to. It was going to hurt. I had to get used to pain and muscle soreness and help my brain understand that it needed this and that I wasn’t breaking, it was ok. In fact, it was what i needed because this new pain was creating a new person.
- I had to breakthrough my negative self talk and start believing in myself, this took a long time. I had imposter syndrome and a very nasty self care model. I hated on myself regularily. This came in the form of therapy and having a great community of people who would call me out when I got negative…but it also worked itself out when I started challenging my body. If I was negative, I would do poorly in the gym. When I was postive, good results came. It started to tip the scales when my goals were to improve my skills…this in turn, built my confidence and i removed the negative self talk.
then I lost the weight….are you prepared to invest in yourself the right way?
So, it’s not easy, it’s not fun. But the results are incredible.

There is no easy way to be your best self. It is hard and it takes time and energy.
It also takes money and priviledge. I was able to pay for coaches and membership and gear and healthy food and so much more. There are limits you can do to achieve this without priviledge and I want to make sure I mention how important that is.
When you are struggling financially your options are more challening. It’s just harder. If you are not struggling financially and you say cost is a factor, your priorities may need to be checked. I had to cut things out of my life to prioritize this. It’s a lot of sacrifice. But we’ve gotten so far off course with our priorities that it makes it seem impossible to invest in yourself… but you’re worth it.
So, your homework, should you choose to accept it:
Set a new goal, and don’t make it “weight loss”. Consider this a “health journey”.
What are you able to do today to add in a bit of consistency and clean eating into your day. Just try one new thing. Eat an apple, it will help :)
Add your results to the comments and let support each other ❤
