Many Sri Lankans were surprised by the scale of state plundering yesterday as they wandered through the presidential palace.

BM Chandrawathi, a handkerchief seller in Colombo, said she had never seen such a residence hours after protesters stormed the palace to force out President Rajapaksa. “They enjoyed super-luxury while we suffered,” Chandrawathi, 61, said. “We were hoodwinked.”

Weeks of rolling protests over the economic crisis culminated on Saturday night when a crowd surged past armed guards into the presidential palace.
