We all heard them, we all know them. You can not scroll down in any social media without seeing at least one Life Changing Morning Habits post. Some of us may find them useful, a few of us might find them inspiring and a lot of us just love to hate them. Me… I find them freaking bullsh*t and today I’m going to explain why.
What are those?
The magical tips which were supposed to cure your depression, make you a more productive person and give some sense to your day. People nowadays talk about these tips like they are some brand new approach live your life and become better but in actuality they are at least as old as Benjamin Franklin.
So in truth, they are just random, unachievable and mostly impractical goals/tips that just feed into today’s productivity and optimization fetish culture.
Now you might think that if I haven’t tried any of them how can I call these tips unreasonable?
But let me tell you something: I did try them.
I did them most of them for several months and some of them for more than a year everyday. A few of them I was forced to do for a limited amount of time. Some of them I am still doing every morning. And I am not doing them just to prove my point or out of spite, I actually do see some kind of value in them but do not believe there is any difference between someone following them and someone who doesn’t.
Without further ado, here are 6 Morning Habits I Find Bullsh*t without any specific order.
Do not Touch Your Phone
PHONE BAD! A common trope that you can hear everywhere. Almost all of us check their phones last thing in the night and first thing in the morning and it is true that social media is time consuming.
Social media is designed to be time consuming.
But if it is wasting our time and considered an unhealthy behaviour why so many people keep doing it? Because WE NEED THAT DOPAMINE to keep going. Almost nothing you do in your daily life is normal or healthy. Waking up in an unreasonable time to go to a building to look at a screen for a 8–10 hours is not healthy or sustainable. But no one wants to think about this. That quick rush of happiness and minutes of mindless scrolling is just enough keep us from thinking about this dreadful thing everyday.
I went without touching a smart phone for a month and you know what changed in my life? Nothing. Instead of checking social media every morning and every night, I just slept more.
People also tend to forget your phone is the device that wakes you up in the morning. You have to touch your phone to turn off your alarm right after you wake up. I’ve seen people suggest getting an alarm clock just to avoid this but I find the idea of getting another electrical device just to not touch your phone ridiculous and too much of a first world issue.
Don’t forget, your mobile is also something that keeps you connected. I like getting and sending morning messages to my significant other. I want to ask them how is their morning going? Why would I want to wait to do something that makes me happy?
Make your bed
Here I’m not going to cite an obscure piece of research that was done years ago and never backed later which states it may be more healthy to not do your bed because it may choke dust mites.
I’m just going to say doing your bed is just plain boring and any mental health benefit it may give you is minuscule. I have done it for 2 months straight and everyday I wake up it just felt like another chore that I needed to do. It is just better to not do it or doing something else instead. Just go to work 2 minutes earlier.
Start the day with your why?
Or meditate for some time. This is the act of giving your day a purpose, finding something to strive for or something you can come back to when you feel down. I find meditation useful but I did not find any difference between doing meditation for 5 minutes every day or 30 minutes on Sunday every week.
Another thing, finding your why is hard.
Most of the time we do not do the things because we want to but because we have to. And do you know WHY? Because that’s just how things are.
Not everything has a why, not everything has to have a why and neither do you.
Take a cold shower
I tried to do this consistently several times but never managed to get the habit. Do you know why? Because you never get used to it. Every time you go into the shower and just before you turn on the valve you get the chills. It makes you afraid of taking showers. It forces you to keep it short. And sometimes it can even make you get sick.
It is already hard taking cold showers during the summer but it is almost impossible to do during the winter where even leaving your warm bed feels impossible.
It may be good for you skin and all but the fear of taking showers is just not worth it.
Go outside
I have no idea where people who suggest this live but like any other normal human being I live in a concrete jungle. You would be lucky to see two trees next to each other when you go outside. Also no one considers the weather. Imagine taking a cold shower then going for a walk during heavy rain. I do not think getting sick is a morning habit you should have.
I’ve seen people saying that you should go take a walk in nature for at least 30 minutes every morning. My friend if you have the option to go outside and walk in nature for 30 minutes everyday that means you made it you do not have to grind anymore.
Read a book
I’m pretty sure someone who gives an advice like “Read a book for 10 minutes every morning” did not read a single book in their whole life.
Reading a book is not an activity you time box.
You stop reading when you reach the end of chapter or when you think you can continue later. Otherwise you will just keep reading the same pages over and over again.
Of course reading books or reading in general is good for you but trying to fit the activity to your morning routine is just unnecessary.
