With about 70,000 hotel rooms across its 710 square kilometres, Singapore isn’t short of accommodation, and certainly not short of stays with character. From the exquisite heritage of Raffles to the spectacular high-rise of Marina Bay Sands, the city state has plenty of places in which to find your level of comfort or character.
Now there’s a new stay adding comfort and character of a unique kind – but be quick. Though it took two years to build, it’s a pop-up, with limited tenure and the end date is yet to be announced.
Garden Pod is a temporary hotel taking up residence in Gardens by the Bay, offering a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in Singapore’s green heart.
As high-rise and cosmopolitan as Singapore is, there’s a reason Why it’s called the Garden City. It has thousands of hectares of nature reserves and more than 300 public parks and gardens. Gardens by the Bay opened in 2012, a repurposing of a site developed for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
Since then, the 101-hectare waterfront park that includes landmarks such as the Supertree Grove and the giant conservatories Cloud Forest and Flower Dome has become one of the nation’s most popular attractions.
Former IT consultant Seah Liang Chiang started his Shipping Container Hotel business with two pop-ups in lesser-known Singapore locales before realising his dream of creating something more substantial in Garden Pod.
Garden Pod is designed by Singapore firm Laud Architects and comprises four, two-storey suites with the upper levels connected to the lower by spiral staircases made of repurposed shipping containers. Eighty per cent powered by solar energy, the portable hotel is built and runs on sustainability principles.
Each suite has a kitchen, living area and bedroom, so guests need never leave their prime position in the Gardens by the Bay Serene Garden, a two-hectare space designed around the concept of Japanese Zen.
But when the hustle and bustle of the city beckons, it’s good to know there’s an MTR stop close by.
