A woman had the fright of her life when she found a bright orange tarantula the ‘size of a hand’ in her garden.
The creepy-crawly was first spotted by some tilers who were so scared they knocked on Sarah Rodmell’s door and told her to ‘sort it’.
‘They did not want to touch it or be anywhere near it,’ she said.
The mum-of-two said she is ‘terrified’ of spiders, but finds tarantulas a little ‘more calm’, so went out with a box to try and trap it.
Sarah, 30, did some research and now believes the enormous spider was an ‘aggressive’ baboon tarantula from South Africa.
‘It was my 13-year-old daughter who looked up trying to match the spider – and we think she got it right.
‘She had a very good look at it and she matched it because on the top of its back, it has quite a distinctive pattern.’
Sarah said the situation was a bit ‘unreal’, adding: ‘He or she was chilling in a box in my kitchen. Every time I was walking in the kitchen, I was like “oh my God, I have a tarantula in my house!”.’
The orange baboon tarantula can be found across the African continent and are incredibly defensive and quick to bite. As with most tarantulas, they should not be approached.
‘This type of tarantula is very aggressive and they bite straight away,’ Sarah said. ‘They do not hesitate.’
‘My three-year-old son wanted to name it Dobby and keep it as a pet. The rescuers actually kept his name as Dobby.’
How the tarantula made its way to Sarah’s garden in Nottingham remains a mystery.
After trapping the critter, she contacted an exotic pet store in Longborough who came to collect it right away.
Sarah added: ‘I put a post on Facebook asking people if they lost the pet, but it is highly unlikely that this was someone’s pet because it is just not a common thing.
‘But from what I heard Dobby is just being kept in there and looked after at Washington’s Relentless Reptiles.’
