A 950-home development in Stratford, east London, has secured outline planning permission.
The scheme, which has been developed by London-based Gort Scott, also features 52,000 square metres of flexible space for retail, work and community use.
About 45 per cent of the 948 homes planned for the development in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will be classed as affordable. The site, close to the DLR station at Pudding Mill Lane, is currently occupied by the temporary ABBA Arena.
There will also be a new nursery as well as a health centre, shops, cafes and restaurants, as part of the scheme.
The project’s planning consent is subject to the signing of Section 106 agreements, which are agreements between local authorities and developers focusing on a development’s impact on the local area.
The London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC), which is leading the project, will begin its search for a development partner in early 2023, while building work is scheduled to start in 2026.
The LLDC hopes to complete the wider site by 2033, with the build providing about 2,000 jobs. Gort Scott’s design was supported by architects 5th Studio, JCLA and ZCD.
Gort Scott associate Alan Worn said the masterplan would deliver new homes, jobs and public space, and would “unlock strategic connections and the neighbourhood’s potential”.
“Pudding Mill Lane has a rich history with a character shaped by its waterways and industrial heritage,” Worn added.
“We want to bring that character through and are therefore delighted that our masterplan is underpinned by high-quality design standards and a rigorous design code that sets this out.”
