Rishi Sunak could go to Cop27 climate summit, minister Mark Spencer says
Suella Braverman has claimed illegal immigration is “out of control,” as she defended overcrowding at a Kent asylum facility.
Responding to questions from shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper, Ms Braverman suggested the Labour party was not “serious” about stopping illegal migration before telling the Commons that the issue was out of control.
“We need to be straight with the public. The system is broken. Illegal migration is out of control and too many people are interested in playing political parlour games, covering up the truth than solving the problem,” she said.
She added that she is serious about “stopping the invasion” on the southern coast telling MPs.
Yvette Cooper said decision-making for cases of migrants has “collapsed.” She there has been a “total failure” to stop the proliferation of criminal gangs linked to small boat crossings.
Ms Braverman also denied claims she had rejected policy advice, saying as a former attorney general, she knew the importance of legal counsel.
Charities condemn Braverman’s comments on migrants ‘invading’ southern coast
Migrant charities have condemned the home secretary’s claims that there is an “invasion” of migrants on the southern coast.
Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants said: “Suella Braverman has called people seeking safety here an ‘invasion’ on the South Coast. One day after a far-right firebomb attack on an asylum centre. Heinous. We cannot allow Braverman’s dehumanising language + decision-making to continue. She’s putting lives at risk.”
Charity Care 4 Calais added the that home secretary’s language was “incredibly offensive.”
“Refugees are escaping from conflicts – they know what being invaded feels like. We are lucky that many of us do not. To suggest they are committing an act of war when that is what they are fleeing is indefensible,” the group said on Twitter.

Home secretary Suella Braverman agreed with suggestions from Conservative MP Lee Anderson that some migrants can “get on a dinghy and go straight back to France” if they believe the accommodation in the UK is not good enough.
Mr Anderson told the Commons: “We’ve got Albanian criminals leaving Albania, which is a safe country, the same criminals then setting up shop in France, they’re then leaving France, which is a safe country, and coming to the UK across the Channel, and then when they get into accommodation we’ve got the opposition parties saying the accommodation is not good enough for them.
“Or does the Home Secretary agree with me that if the accommodation is not good enough for them they can get on a dinghy and go straight back to France.”
Home secretary Suella Braverman replied: “Well, my honourable friend is right.”
York Central MP Rachael Maskell urged ministers to “open up a homes for refugees scheme” and told the Commons: “The conditions at Manston are clearly unsafe and inhumane. We know obviously the suffering that people have experienced there, after 12 years of shameful watch of this government.”

The home secretary claimed that “several four-star hotels” were being used to house migrants and suggested the accommodation was “quite nice” based on its costs, after questions about overcrowding.
She says complaints about the quality of the accommodation priced at £150 per person per night, she said, are unjustified.

Suella Braverman was asked to clarify how many hotels she was personally invited to approve for use by her officials during her first tenure as Home Secretary.
Dame Diana Johnson told MPs the home office’s director general for customer services told the Home Affairs Committee, which she chairs, that “three hotels were approved one week ago when the right honourable member for Welwyn Hatfield (Grant Shapps) was the then home secretary”.
She went on: “So can this home secretary confirm exactly how many hotels or alternative accommodation options she was personally invited by her officials to approve for use during her first tenure as home secretary?
“And how many hotels or alternative accommodation options she actually did grant approval and permission for during her time?”
The home secretary replied: “I will repeat myself again. Since 6 September over 30 new hotels have been agreed, providing over 4,500 additional hotel bed spaces. That’s been under my watch. That’s been when I’ve been in charge of the home office.”

Tory MP suggests Manston failings are result of home secretary’s delays in procuring accommodation
Conservative MP Sir Roger Gale suggested failings at Manston was Suella Braverman’s fault.
“That facility operated absolutely magnificently and very efficiently indeed until five weeks ago, when I’m afraid the home secretary took the policy decision not to commission further accommodation and it is that, that has led to the crisis at Manston,” he said.
He asked: “Will (she) now give the House an assurance first that the adequate accommodation will be provided to enable the Manston facility to return to its previous work?
Ms Braverman replied: “I just must gently correct him however. On no occasion have I blocked the procurement of hotels or alternative accommodation to ease the pressure on Manston, I’m afraid that simply isn’t true.”

Labour MP Stella Creasey told the home secretary: “there is nothing patriotic about making children suffer, but that is exactly what is happening as a direct result of this Home Secretary’s failure to get to grips with processing asylum seekers,”
In response to a question from Labour’s Stella Creasy Suella Braverman said some asylum seekers were being housed in four-star hotels, costing £150 per night.
Ms Creasy, who did not get an answer to her question about whether the government would publish the contracts that applied for the care of refugee children, said Braverman appeared not to care.

Gigafactory plans close to collapse raising fresh doubts about UK car industry
Plans for a £3.8bn battery gigafactory are close to collapse, in a move raising fresh questions about the UK car industry following the Brexit trade deal.
The troubles that have hit the UK start-up Britishvolt are also a major embarrassment for Boris Johnson – who hailed the firm as a key part of his “Green Industrial Revolution” earlier this year.
The firm – which planned to create 300 jobs through the factory in Northumberland – is poised to enter administration after struggling to find investors.
A promise of £100m of financial support promised while the current prime minister, Rishi Sunak, was chancellor is now expected to be withdrawn, with the factory not yet bought.

Suella Braverman warns of ‘invasion of our southern coast’ as she defends handling of asylum centre crisis
Suella Braverman has warned of the “invasion of our southern coast” as she defended her handling of the Kent asylum centre crisis.
The embattled home secretary also insisted she had never blocked the procurement of hotels to ease the pressure on the centre.
She claimed that “some 40,000 people” have crossed the English channel this year as she addressed the wider immigration situation.
She told the Commons: “Let me be clear this is a global migration crisis.
“We have seen an unprecedented number of attempt to illegally cross the channel in small boats.
“Some 40,000 people have crossed this year alone. More than double the number of arrivals by the same point last year.”

‘Illegal immigration out of control,’ Braverman claims
Suella Braverman responding to the shadow home secretary said illegal immigration is out of control.
“The British people deserve to know which party is serious about stopping the invasion on the south coast,” Ms Braverman said.
“The system is broken, illegal migration is out of control and too many people are more interested in playing political parlour games covering up the truth than solving the problem.”
Ms Braverman said hat she is serious to end to “scourge” of illegal migration and would do whatever it takes, adding that’s why some want to get rid of her.
She reiterated that she did not block hotels or veto legal advice to procure emergency accommodation.
