Our obsession with happiness often makes us forget that life is a hurdle race, not a sprint. You do not just start running to the sign of a gunshot and reach your goal within a few seconds. Instead, you are introduced to several hurdles during the whole race. The hurdles might be high or rocky or watery, making it difficult for you to jump over. Some might be low enough to cross easily. Nevertheless, you are supposed to cross them. Cause if you don’t, you will always remain in the same position; fearing and regretting. Here are some of those hurdles or harsh truths about life that no matter what, you have to accept if you want to live a happy life.

1. Life will not be fair all the times

Life is like a see-saw. One moment you are in the air, the other moment on the ground. You are going to face highs and lows throughout your whole life. You cannot always expect happiness. Also, you might not always get what you expect. And you will have to accept that. Life won’t treat you well all the time. To live a happy life you will have to accept certain things the way they are.

2. There is no perfect time to start something

If you are waiting for a perfect time to start a YouTube channel, begin writing a book or launch a business, I’m afraid that time will never come. If you are waiting for Monday to begin doing something, you might wait for Tuesday as well. Perhaps, next week would be fine or next month too. There is no such thing as tomorrow. You have only got today. So whatever it is, just take that first step and keep going.

3. You are allowed to fail and then try even harder

No person has only succeeded in life. Big or small, everyone has had failures. And it is normal. In fact, failure is indispensable. But what is not okay is to give up. Elon Musk’s SpaceX failed three times before making a successful spacecraft landing. Microsoft wasn’t the first thing Bill Gates invented. His former company Traf-O-Data was a complete disaster. Any successful person, famous or not, has their own failure stories. But they never gave up. You will fail too. This is how the universe works. But don’t ever give up. Try harder than before and success shall come to you.

4. You cannot change some things about yourself

One thing that I hate about the word “flawless” is that it exists. This might not make sense but when nothing in this world is flawless then Why does this word even exist. People have flaws. You have flaws. And this is what makes you unique. Instead of embracing them, you turn them into your insecurities.

Some things about you can never be changed. And it’s all natural. You have that body or skin type because you were born with it. Whether fair, brown, or black, you were born with that color. So stop changing yourself for the sake of some unrealistic standards. Accept yourself for who you are, for your uniqueness. And ultimately, you will be happier than before.

5. You might not like it when you get something you have always wanted

I recently bought a black shoulder bag that I had been wanting since very long. Now that I have it, I still don’t feel content because I don’t have a mustard-colored bag. Someday I would want a blue bag and some other day a violet one. There is no end to human wants. The list goes on forever. Even if it is not a materialistic thing, still there would be times you will not be happy once you get what you have been wanting since very long. Happiness depends on how you react to a situation even if it turned out to be unexpected.

6. You are responsible for your own happiness

People can be a part of your happy moments, perhaps a reason sometimes. But alone you are responsible for your own happiness and inner peace. You cannot depend on someone or something else. Agreed, that things might turn out to be unfavorable sometimes. But some situations are just not under your control. Therefore you are supposed to accept and let go of that moment. Consequently, you will lead a happy life.

7. You always have a choice

While I was working a 9–5 job my boss said to me one day.” I am really impressed because you never say a no to any work told you to do.” I stood shocked because I never realized that I could choose to say a no. I always did whatever I was told to do even at times I didn’t want to. But since that day, I learnt to say a no especially to the work that did not resonate with my principles. And I promise, I began to feel happier in life. Hence, you always have a choice.

8. You become who you choose to be

Our situations can only transform or reshape us. But who we become is the result of our decisions. The habits, bad or good, that you foster today will impact your tomorrow. If you decide to be physically active daily, you will probably be a lot healthier as compared otherwise. If you choose to procrastinate, you are definitely going to miss the opportunities. Therefore, it all depends on you; your decisions and your habits. The happy life you long for depends on how you frame it.

9. You don’t wake up and become the butterfly

This is one of my favorite quotes from the book “Sun and Her Flowers” written by Rupi Kaur. This line, in itself, is a deep yet precise explanation. There is a step-to-step process for every task that you do in your life. You cannot expect the end results without going through the whole process. In other words, it simply explains that you have to have patience. If you wish to start a business, you probably won’t start as the CEO. It, of course, takes time for you to reach there. You won’t become the bestselling author overnight. It takes practice, hard work and patience. Therefore, rather than expecting unrealistic results, work hard for your dreams.

10. Time won’t last forever

Good or bad, favorable or not, but the time shall pass. And there’s nothing you can do about it but accept. If life is getting harder, just keep going. This won’t last forever. If you are experiencing extreme joy, don’t get overwhelmed. This is not permanent. Therefore, just enjoy it but don’t get used to it. One of my favorite quotes from Disney is “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. But today is a gift. That is why it’s called present.” I mean, we shall all die someday. The best that we can make out of this life is by living it.

11. Not everyone around you is going to like you

No matter what you do, some people are always going to be unhappy and disappointed with you. And you can’t control that. You can just learn to live with it. It’s human psychology to trying to please everyone around even if it demands a sacrifice of your happiness and peace. But people are opinionated. They will inevitably judge you. Hence, it is practically not possible to please everyone.

These facts are like a bitter pill to swallow. But these are the essence of life. Accepting them shall lead you towards a more happy life.
