To help households with rising energy costs, the Government has announced a £150 council tax rebate (payment) for households in bands A to D.
Why is the government providing support?
From 1 April 2022, the energy price cap will rise and many households will struggle to pay higher energy bills and to heat their homes.
Who will receive this £150 payment (rebate)?
Most households in council tax bands A to D will qualify for a payment (rebate) of £150 from April 2022. The council will make a payment to households. This won’t have to be repaid.
If you pay less than £150 council tax, or you receive single person discount, or do not pay because you receive council tax support, you will still be entitled to the payment.
The payment will not be made for empty or second homes.
If you don’t know which band your property is in, look on your latest council tax bill or Check your council tax band online – GOV.UK.
When will I receive this payment?
We expect that most people who pay council tax by direct debit will receive this money in April. The payment will usually be made to the bank account from which the direct debit is taken.
For those who do not pay by direct debit, we expect to be ready to start processing payments in April. An online claim is expected to be made.

I do not qualify for the £150. Can I still get help?
There will be some further funding available to help households who do not qualify for this payment. The level of support will depend on the funding and guidance we receive from government.

You need to ask the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) to review your council tax band. See further information at: Challenging your council tax band – GOV.UK. We will not be able to help you with this.
