I lose 30 kilograms in six months

Laura turned her approach to health around in just six months and couldn’t be happier.

It’s easy to get stuck in the same dietary and exercise habits when you’re busy and don’t really know where to start. That was the case for 31-year-old student Laura Kukulovski, who admits that she wasn’t taking the path that was best for her at the time.

“My diet was not good at all. I ate a lot of takeaway food and made easy meals. I drank 2 litres of coke a day and also lived on energy drinks which often resulted in skipping meals and afternoon sugar crashes,” she explains.

I hated doing workouts or really any form of exercise, I honestly couldn’t understand how people found it enjoyable.”

At the time she’d just secured a new desk job, but the sedentary nature of it didn’t help her situation. She says she was buying takeaway lunches every day and grabbing quick food options wherever possible.

One moment stands out for Kukulovski, when she decided to turn it all around.

“It was a few months after I had my third baby, I was invited out for a girls night with a few friends. The club photographer came around and took a few snaps of me with my friends which was fine,” she said.

“I could not believe how I looked because when I looked in the mirror I didn’t see myself like that. That was it, then and there. I decided ‘I’m making a change. I want to love myself again’.”

She decided to join The Healthy Mummy lifestyle plan and hasn’t looked back.

Weighing in at 94 kilograms when she began, Kukulovski managed to lose 31 kilograms in just six months.

“[I made] so many changes. I have now substituted all of my ingredients in the cupboard and fridge for healthier options such as wholemeal breads and flours instead of white,” she says.

“I have added more fruits and vegetables to my entire family’s everyday meals and snacks. I cut back completely on my soft drink and energy drinks and added in more water to my day.”

It wasn’t all a walk in the park though, and she admits that she stalled a little at first.

“I got back on the bandwagon and I stuck with it and really dived into what easy changes I could make while I adjusted to the lifestyle change. I’m so glad I didn’t give up.”

After losing 34% body fat, and maintaining her new weight of between 60-63 kilograms for six months, she’s happy to say the experience was a success. Her key piece of advice?

“Each and everyone one of us are on our own personal journeys and for different reasons, don’t compare your journey to others, embrace your own unique path and let it lead you to your goals.”

“A lifetime of bad habits don’t change overnight, [so I remember] to take my time and enjoy the personal growth my journey has given me.”

Laura’s typical day on a plate:

  • Breakfast: Healthy Mummy’s tummy salted caramel smoothie
  • Lunch: A warm or cold salad or rice paper rolls
  • Snacks: Always changing
  • Afternoon tea: Healthy Mummy’s tummy salted caramel smoothie
  • Dinner: Stove top lasagne or one-pan creamy herb chicken

Laura’s exercise schedule

“I aim to workout at least 3 times a week for 45 mins. I do this by using the Healthy Mummy app exercises. There’s so many different types of exercise styles to suit whatever you feel like doing that day. My go to is Pilates or the 28 days Stronger program if I really want to get my sparkle on.”
