Daily Dough #2 — Use this underutilized tool to help sell your products.

Reddit is one of the most popular websites in the world. Half social media site, half news aggregate site, it’s very valuable to businesses that know how to utilized it. In this episode of Daily Dough, we’re going to go over the strategy that I used to sell multiple thousands of dollars worth of product using Reddit.
Firstly, people don’t look too fondly at people looking to sell their products on the platform. But there is a way to do this without breaking any of Reddit’s rules while also not coming off as a total shill. Here are some valuable steps to take when using Reddit as a sales funnel;
1.) Don’t be robotic, be a person
If you’re acting like a bot that only cares about your bottom line you won’t last long on the platform. Each subreddit is moderated by a different person and these people have their own tolerances when it comes to how much spam they can take. Act like a real user who interacts with the community and show off your products in a way that doesn’t come across as a shill.
Post consistently with quality in subreddits related to your niche. That way when you want to share your product people don’t think you’re in it for only the financial aspect.
2.) Build your own subreddit
This can take some work but it is valuable if you do it right. Creating your own subreddit with your own rules can provide some beneficial results. Attempt to foster and grow a community that you’re in the driver seat of. That way when you promote your products you can do so without shilling in someone elses domain.
Again, try to be a positive addition to your own community and don’t only spam your products. Reply to comments, create your own engaging posts, and upvote others.
3.) Know the rules
Each subreddit has their own rules and they’re usually posted on the right side of the site. Make sure you know the rules in the subreddits you’re going to participate in. Most will have a no links rule or a no promoting rule, follow these rules! If you don’t follow the rules you may be banned from posting in the subreddit, and multiple strikes can lead to a permanent account ban.

On the flip side, there are subreddits specifically for selling products and also subreddit that don’t mind if you plug your links. Do your research and figure out your game plan is before throwing stuff at a wall to see what sticks.
Find which subreddits you feel would be a good avenue for your products, contribute to them, and gradually sprinkle in your content. If people are interested in your products they will send you messages which you can reciprocate by providing them links to said products (the counter to the no links or promoting rules).
4.) Pictures are worth a 1,000 words
Make sure to take enticing and engaging photos of the products you’re going to post. You want people to be lured in as soon as they see your product. What we’re wanting is to create photos that are so good, people will message us asking where they can buy our products (I’ve had more than 100 orders that start just like this).

For ideas on pictures, browse Reddit or even Instagram to get a sense of what’s popular. If you want to get more specific, scope out your successful competition and see what works for them. Borrow ideas or even improve on what they’re doing and will may be surprised at the outcome.
5.) Work on your titles
When posting content to Reddit one of the first things people will see is the title of your post. Titles such as “This ____ I just made” or “A hobby of mine, creating _____” are engaging and will lure people into clicking. We live in the clickbait era of content consumption so attempt to bait people into to clicking without being too misleading.
This may take some time but once you figure out the recipe you shouldn’t have any issues getting consistent upvotes which in turn will lead to more eyes on your products. It’s going to be a combination of enticing titles, engaging photos, and some interaction on your end.
6.) Upvotes do matter
Unfortunately to get people to see your products on Reddit, you will need to be upvoted. It’s how Reddit works, you get upvoted, which in turn boost your content up the page, which then in turn gets eyes on your post. Early upvotes are important so if you have a friend group that can assist in getting you those early upvotes, share you posts with them.
It’s not all that difficult but can be disheartening if you post something and the upvotes don’t show up. Working on your titles and your images are ingredients to a much bigger dish, once you figure out that formula, consistent upvotes will happen. Pay attention to trends and focus on content towards the top, you may see some patterns that you can incorporate into your own content.
7.) Advertising on Reddit
Believe it or not, Reddit offers a way to advertise your own products. You can pay them to create posts in specific subreddits, and you will be charged based on people click or view your ad. The great thing about this is, you can target subreddits where you know your product will be received well. If you sell stickers, target /r/stickers, if you sell mugs target /r/mugs, etc., etc..
This can be costly if done wrong so if you see something isn’t working, adjust your ad and target a different subreddit. Like with all advertising, you may have to spend some money to figure out what does and doesn’t work.
8.) Provide valuable and useful content
It’s a good way to contribute to a community you would like to sell your products in. You don’t only have to only provide pictures of your cool products, you can add value to the subreddit you’re participating in. Guides, tutorials, or useful information will be upvoted and give you credibility.
Sprinkle in this useful information along with your product posts. People won’t question it when you start shilling as they see you as a useful member to their community.
An example of this is /u/CornDoggyLOL who provides matchup doodles of each NFL team every week of the NFL season. At the end of the season he then turns them into stickers which people eat up as he sits on over 2,500 sales on Etsy.
9.) Sell products that people want
This one is obvious. You want to make sure you’re offering a product/service that people are going to buy. You may be starting fresh with only one thing to sell, Reddit will be a good gauge on if that product is going to do well. Generally from my experience, products that are accessible to a bigger audience (aka cheaper) will do better.
Items such as stickers, pins, key chains, lanyards, or other small items all have an audience and are all relatively inexpensive. Another option is print on demand clothing from services such as Printify or Printful which allow you to sell clothing or other merchandise items without maintaining an inventory. Build a site or start an Etsy, and link when given the opportunity.
10.) Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket
This saying is as old as time. Don’t put all of your effort into only one sale funnel. Have multiple. Reddit is good and does provide you with a way to reach an additional audience but there are other ways to sell your products. Other social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, or even Tik Tok offer ways to get exposure to your products. There will always be the next hot thing, improvise and adapt to the everchanging trends.
It’s pretty obvious but having multiple roads that lead back to your products will lead to more sales. While these methods above do involve Reddit, try using them on other social media sites, you may be surprised at the results.
