Being true to what your heart wants isn’t simple. Right from the time your were little, friends and family may have been there with their suggestions. But at some point you realized it was up to you. Up to you not to pander to other people’s opinions of who they thought you should be. You decided to be true to yourself from then on! Acknowledging at the same time others too have rights. Others too have feelings which can be hurt. So you promise — no harm to others!
I, right from a very young age have never been a ‘people pleaser’. At times this left me with very few (and at times no) friends. Yet, I mostly felt comfortable with who I am. A little lonely at times, may be. But comfortable with ME!
I was an only child. I wonder? If this gave me the grounding I needed to be comfortable with times of being alone, and yet not lonely.
Your heart knows what your heart knows, right? Your heart knows who you truly are! So to be true to yourself, you need to alertly and actively listen. And, do you want to know something completely awesome? This wonderful and amazing process of listening attentively to your heart continues for the rest of your life. Awesome, yes? Have you heard of the phrase ‘you should learn something new everyday?’
But, wait a moment here. You don’t live an isolated life on a remote island. You interact and have dealings with others nearly everday. Your heart wants your dealings with other people to honestly reflect the true you.
Are you comfortable enough with yourself for this? Your heart knows you and your needs.
When you truly know who you are — you will be comfortable with others also. No need for masks or pretence. People you care about will accept you for who you are. Why? Because you are brave and confident enough in yourself to open up. People know who you are because you are truthful and honest.
Unfortunately we live in the real world. I don’t know about you. But I get a little tired of the ‘check out’ girls asking ‘how are you this afternoon?’ My silent voice is screaming- ‘here we go again!’ Do we all feel this way? Guessing this is simply what she is trained to say to each of her customers.
Well, I would love to live in the ideal world, where this question is only asked with sincerity and genuine affection. I have for many years only asked ‘how are you?’ when I really want to know. And people who know me respond in kind. Telling me truthfully and openly how they feel. Good or bad. Knowing I will take the time to listen — truly listen.
I am staying true to myself and honouring the person I am speaking to. At times this simple ‘how are you?’ leads to a cuppa and a shared conversation. Can’t get better than that!
