This was an exciting, short-term partnership between the British footwear retailer Russell & Bromley and the national family support charity Home-Start UK.
According to Home-Start’s The Home is Where We Start From, local charity branches are seeing the impact of poverty on families as a result of rising bills and falling income.
Food insecurity and fuel bills have increased and parents report elevated mental health problems, such as higher levels of stress, depression and anxiety.
During the partnership Russell & Bromley donated more than 41,000 pairs of children’s shoes to families supported by Home-Start UK. The majority were delivered to children across the UK within four weeks.
When laid from toe to heel, the shoes would stretch more than five miles, the equivalent of a Mount Everest hike. Everyone rose to the challenge, with teamwork between Russell & Bromley staff, the Home-Start UK corporate team and the local charity network.
Judges said the short-term partnership has taken the pressure off families by providing multiple pairs of shoes to last their children as they grow, and helping to prevent parents from having to make some tough financial choices. It comes at a particularly pressing moment in light of the cost-of-living crisis.
