Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 31) — It’s that time of year again. The Chinese New Year approaches. Streets are decorated with red lanterns and customers flock to shops selling lucky charms.
One may also make “prosperity baskets” and other charms to attract good luck this new lunar year. Here are some tips from a feng shui expert.
Feng Shui expert Johnson Chua told CNN Philippines’ New Day on Monday that prosperity baskets must mainly contain uncooked rice with other charms and ornaments that signify different manifestations to usher in a new year.
“We can put all of these kinds of charms. Include metal ornaments because metal is one of the lucky ornaments for the year 2022 to cure negative energies,” he said.
On top of the rice, put a Wu Lou charm which represents money luck, a plum blossom coin for longevity and good health, a love luck ornament, and some prosperity leaves to expand investments or business opportunities.
Do not forget to put in “lucky money” amounting to ₱888 or ₱999 inside an ang pao or red envelope, he added.
Chua noted that part of the ritual is closing the basket on the midnight of Feb. 1, then opening it only on Feb. 9, the day of the “birth of heaven.” By then, cook the rice from the basket and keep the charms in your pockets or wallets “to use up all the good energies.”
DIY prosperity bowl
For those who do not have the required ornaments and materials, a do-it-yourself prosperity bowl will work just as fine, too. Just put rice on a bowl and put in some red elements such as the ang pao or a ₱50 paper bill on top.
“₱50 has a red color. Put any amount of money or something red, like a red envelope. Kasi pag red, ibig sabihin kinukuha mo ‘yung energy from the heaven (red color means you are receiving energy from the heaven),” he said.
Lucky food for the new year
For the Chinese New Year celebration, Chua recommended preparing noodles or pasta at home because these represent longevity. These can be mixed with round food items like meatballs or siomai to manifest “a bulk of money.”
Serving a whole fish is also recommended to attract wealth. One can also serve some vegetables to manifest growing money.
Pork represents opportunities. Tikoy, on the other hand, represents harmony.
Lucky colors
Chua also recommended wearing red or yellow to attract luck while welcoming the New Year.
“Red is the color of passion and strong energy, while yellow is the color of stability and money,” he said. “That means if you’re wearing either of the two, you’re attracting good energy already.”
