TV star Nick Knowles has paid a visit to a Stoke-on-Trent food bank feeding thousands of people in the city every month.

The BBC DIY SOS presenter is in the city to film him, his team and a band of volunteers building a new green space in Fegg Hayes.

The host and his experts, made up of manager Mark Millar, electrician Billy Byrne, builder Julian Perryman and plasterer Chris Frediani, are in Fegg Hayes for the next seven days.

They were called in by local charity, the Sylvester Community Trust, which wants to transform the area on Oxford Road into something which can benefit local people, such as improving their health, education or food growing activities.

But the TV host took time away from the busy project to meet staff and volunteers at the Stoke-on-Trent Food bank today (February 18).

Nick and his team visited the main warehouse in Magdalen Road, Blurton, to hear about the vital work being carried out by the food bank.

Carline Wolfe, Community and Business Liaison Co-ordinator at the food bank, said: “This morning we had a visit from DIY SOS Big Build taking a brief break from their filming locally at Fegg Hayes, building a Community Garden for the Sylvester Community Trust, to benefit local people, growing and providing fresh produce.

“They came to our main warehouse at Magdalen Road, Blurton to speak to Karry Poole, our Finance Officer and one of our referral team.

“They were interested to hear about the vital work carried out by Stoke-on-Trent Foodbank in meeting the needs of local people for emergency food.

“Also, that the number of people fed in December 2021 (1655) and January 2022 (1605) are even up from last year.

“Also, we signpost people to where they can get advice, including through our partner charity Money Matters to help them sort out the crisis that brought them to us.

“Karry shared how she has been a volunteer at her church food bank centre, one of the 16 centres where people with designated vouchers can collect food.”

It is not known for sure when the Stoke-on-Trent DIY SOS episode will air on the BBC.

However, there have been murmurings that it could broadcast in May on BBC One. Keep your eyes peeled to the channel listings for the latest information.
