Helmsley Walled Garden: Looking after ourselves

The year has just moved up a couple of gears as we open the garden to visitors.

Visitors support us just by visiting, their admission is a valuable income stream that helps us to stay open and provide therapeutic horticulture opportunities for all our volunteers.

We’re busy and will get progressively busier throughout the summer. So I make it a rule (one I am continually breaking and then remaking) to go out into the garden every day, even if only for a few moments.

It’s accepted wisdom now that being outdoors in nature, even just sitting in a garden or green space is a valuable tool for keeping minds and bodies in good shape.

Given the grim news that just keeps coming, the projected rise in National Insurance, petrol and other vital commodities rising in price and a whopping rise in energy prices to look forward to we all need to care for ourselves a bit more.

I am not for one minute saying that sitting in a garden is going to make all our worries disappear. But almost everyone in this country has had a pretty rough time of it for at least the last two years, if not more.

Taking care of ourselves, especially if we are caring for others, is vital. I’m not sure where all this has come from. I started typing with one idea in my head for this and somehow this came out.

I suppose what I’m trying to say in a long-winded way is: take care of yourself, get outside if you can, go to a beautiful open space if you can, talk to others and don’t bottle things up. It is not a long-term strategy. Believe me, I know. This is Why I guess I have ended up writing this particular blog piece.
