I always invest in audiobooks as well as physical copies, and sometimes it might feel costly. Especially if you plan to invest in lots of materials supporting your personal development. I can assure you that if it is focused around your personal motivation as per the first principle, this is a very low-risk investment in a sense of getting incredible dividends that, in any case, will be exponential to the amount you invest in. Compared with other types of self-education (personal or group courses, MBA, conferences, etc.), it is far from being the most expensive.

When I’m confident in the material, I order a physical copy the same day with an audiobook. Suppose I need to give it a try, I prefer to do it with an audiobook supporting sustainable consumption, not ordering a copy of it until I can prove the value. The subscription model for audiobooks (I use Audible) works very successfully as additional motivation, so it keeps you on track of at least one book per month if you want to be rational about your investment.

To sum up, if reading for you is focused on your motivations and growth, treat books as an investment with low risk. More books you have around — greater your return will be.

Nowadays, it takes you seconds to log in to Netflix, HBO, Disney+ etc, or play some catchy mobile game to pass a couple of minutes between your main activities. If you are committed to self-growth and want to make it easy, then reading should be easier than any of the activities mentioned above.

Moreover, research shows that motivation is not constant, and it has its own ups and downs throughout your week. That’s where switching from physical copy and back to the audio version is powerful. Have you got tremendous motivation one day? Go for an hour or two sitting with the physical copy on the couch! Is motivation not quite there today? Utilize all the time in between your main daily activities with easy access audiobook on your phone while you are commuting by public transport, driving to work in your car, getting out for a run, sitting in a queue for your planned appointment, or picking up some groceries. Just find some basic ways to integrate it into your daily routines.

I am a delighted owner of a dog. In addition to spending some time with physical books, very often, I enjoy listening to an audiobook as I walk around my local area with my fur buddy. In the end, it boosts motivation from both sides. Sometimes taking a walk motivates me to go an extra mile in the audiobook, while on other days, the desire to continue from the most interesting moment in the book motivates me to spend more time outside with the dog — a true win-win for both of us! :)

Some people are pretty strict about this — even going to an extreme scale of treating listening as not a real act of reading. I prefer to think that they are correct from output but not from an outcome perspective. I just take the audio version of the same book I read and continue from the moment I stopped.

Don’t like audiobooks? You can, of course, carry with you the physical or e-book copy all the time. But remember that the requirement here is to make it easier than opening Netflix or any other time killer app you use as part of your usual routine.
