My interpretation on Chris Ferrie’s article on contextuality, it’s just TMI so I tried to put that in laymen terms and share my own interpretation. Could be completely wrong!
My understanding is that reality consists of theory (mathematical rules to make accurate prediction on things) and contextuality.
Contextuality is the idea that the world we’re seeing comes from factors that we are unable to experiment or distinguish.
Laser light is a great example to illustrate the idea of contextuality. Once you mix different laser light together, it’s impossible to distinguish from one to another. Instead of understanding HOW the two colours result in the mixture colour, if we do trillion experiments, we’ll eventually find the “colour theory” and correctly predicts the mixture (albeit not knowing HOW), — this is also called the Occam’s razor (when two explanations are presented, we tent to take the simpler one).
Therefore, if there’s no possible way to distinguish how laser is mixed, then by the rule of contextuality, the state of reality (colour) should not only depend on the mixture, but also the context, which might include the breakfast I eat!
Idea is that maybe the universe is the result of what I eat for breakfast, or maybe not. But if I choose to not believe that, I also give up on reality. The decision to ignore breakfast, is the decision to believe that when I see the world, I’m just passively looking at it (laser mixture) as if I am not there. But quantum contextuality rejects this idea.
