Make your own mulch
Proprietary bark mulches can be costly. But lawn clippings do a good job as long as you only ever put on a couple of inches at a time, just adding more after perhaps a couple of weeks. Fine hedge trimmings also make an acceptable coarse mulch where they can’t blow about; this is where a shredder comes in useful.
Look for plant deals
Flower shows usually have specialist nurserymen as well as those piling ’em high and cheap. My favourite is the Shrewsbury Flower Show (this year August 12-13), where you can often find cheap agapanthus and crocosmias.
