Make your own mulch
Proprietary bark mulches can be costly. But lawn clippings do a good job as long as you only ever put on a couple of inches at a time, just adding more after perhaps a couple of weeks. Fine hedge trimmings also make an acceptable coarse mulch where they can’t blow about; this is where a shredder comes in useful.

Flower shows usually have specialist nurserymen as well as those piling ’em high and cheap.
