Here’s a micro change that made it possible.

When was the last time you watched the sunrise? Today is my 20th consecutive day of catching the sunrise.
A few months ago, I realized that I had many aspirations, but I wasn’t devoting enough time to progress on any front. My interests were varied, and I didn’t have that one thing to run towards. It was always more than one thing.
One day, I’d wake up motivated to start composing music. And sure enough, I’d spend the next few days on a YouTube rabbit hole on how to write music. On day 4, I’d no longer want to compose; I’d like to become a writer. On day 7, I’d regret my inactivity over the past week. And this cycle would repeat.
The literal daily snoozefest
After the harsh realization, I decided to wake up early and put in serious effort every day. Below are a few things that I tried:
- I set the alarm for 5:30 AM. And slept through it.
- I placed two alarms — 5:15 AM and 5:30 AM. I snoozed them.
- I slept early. And slept for 9 hours.
Now, there would be the odd day or two when I would wake up to the alarm. But I couldn’t string together a streak of more than 3 days. Perhaps I wasn’t designed to be a morning person…
After trying out the above antics, I threw away the idea of waking up early for a few days. But soon enough, I hit the roadblock of not having enough time again. And the motivation to wake up early struck again.
The ‘trick’ that worked
On my umpteenth quest, I was desperate to make it work (as always). To strengthen my cue, I changed my alarm ringtone to the classic alarm clock trrring. And it worked. It was so loud and annoying that I could not sleep through it. Full disclosure: I had 3 alarms 10 minutes apart.
Regardless, I was happy as long as I somehow woke up early.
It’s impossible to ascertain whether the ringtone change was the only thing that made it click. But I am sure of one thing — I believed that the ringtone change would help, and it did!
