As an implementation of the lessons I learned from the soft skills class of Generasi GIGIH 2.0 by Yayasan Anak Bangsa Bisa & GoTo program about Critical Thinking, I’d like to break down the statement “Grit is the most important trait to survive in Generasi GIGIH (or life)” by using QFT (Question Formulation Technique).

I chose to discuss “Grit is the most important trait to survive in Generasi GIGIH (or life)”

I chose the second option, which is the statement “Grit is the most important trait to survive in Generasi GIGIH (or life)” right from the moment I saw it because it has “Generasi GIGIH” in it, so I’m very curious about whether the statement is true. Besides, honestly, grit is not a word I hear very often, so I’d love to know and learn more about it!

Let’s write down whatever questions that pop in mind!

When I first read the statement:

“Grit is the most important trait to survive in Generasi GIGIH (or life).”

I started to wander with a lot of questions in mind, like what exactly is grit? who are people who have grit? where can people study and develop grit traits? when can people start to have grit? Why is grit important? how does grit affect the survival in Generasi GIGIH (or life)?

That’s right! I began with the 5W1H questioning method. Then, I came up with more questions like what if people don’t have grit or don’t develop it enough? what’s next after people have grit? so what can people do when they have grit? what else can people do to maintain their grit?

Let’s analyze by categorizing and improving the questions!

Whew! the questions go on and on in my mind. To improve those questions to be more understandable, I need to label the questions as open or closed and reword the questions.

All of the questions in my mind turned out to be open questions; questions that cannot be answered with a static “yes” or “no” response. They all require longer answers and more explanations. Here’s the list of questions that I rephrased to make them more comprehensive:

  1. What does grit mean?
  2. What are the characteristics of grit?
  3. Who are gritty people?
  4. Where can people boost grit traits?
  5. When does grit matter the most?
  6. Why is grit the key to success and survival?
  7. How to develop grit in life?
  8. What if people have no grit?
  9. What’s next after having grit?
  10. What else can people do to maintain their grit?
Let’s pick the prioritized questions!

Out of all the ten questions I made, I prioritize the following three questions that will help me make an informed decision about whether or not grit is the most important trait to survive in Generasi GIGIH (or life).

  1. What does grit mean?
  2. Why is grit the key to success and survival?
  3. How to develop grit in life?

The first question is the one that I think is the core of all the questions because to know whether or not a trait is the most important to survive in Generasi GIGIH (or life), I need to understand its definition first. After getting to know the definition, I need to find out the reasons why is it crucial and how to develop grit and then make the utmost use of it.

Let’s plan on what’s gonna be done with the questions!

Next, I create the plan with the next steps that describe what I’ll do with the prioritized questions. I define the information that I need to seek and the tasks I have to do to get the information.

What does grit mean?

Information. The definition, the characteristics, the power of grit.

Task. Read a book titled “Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance” by Angela Duckworth, the psychologist & researcher who developed the definition of grit.

Why is grit the key to success and survival?

Information. The magic grit traits bring when people have it as one of the important traits in life; the advantages, the benefits, the goods of having grit.

Task. Watch YouTube videos about the reasons why grit is the most important trait to survive in life (for me, specifically, in Generasi GIGIH 2.0).

How to develop grit in life?

Information. The practical ways and an actionable step-by-step guide to boost grit traits.

Task. Read articles, and learn from people’s stories and experiences.

Rather than dying from curiosity, I preferred to roll up my sleeves and dive into the answers to the prioritized questions. Here’s what I got from surfing the internet and pondering over my understanding:

What does grit mean?

As stated by Angela Duckworth, grit is passion and perseverance for long-term goals. It is when we persist in things we’re passionate about and persevere in the face of challenges. To persist means to have the commitment and have a plan with direction, while to persevere means to stick with it and endeavor diligently even when adversity or failure arises.

Why is grit the key to success and survival?

According to Michael Page, we need more than talent to really do well in life; we need grit! by having grit, we have a desire to improve and succeed. Gritty people maintain hope and resilience, especially when there are setbacks. In this constantly changing and growing world, people who have grit are more likely to survive because they’ll always find a way to get back up and keep moving by engaging with their pursuit.

How to develop grit in life?

As mentioned in Michael Page, the first thing we need to do is to find our passion. We need to figure out exactly what we wanted to do with our lives. After that, we practice perseverance and break down our goals into actionable steps. By doing this, we’ll find our purposes and eventually develop resilience and hope which gritty people have.

Let’s reflect on the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) process!

Last but not least, reflection! the following are the parts of reflection as the result of my mulled over with a spice of critical thinking after doing the QFT (Question Formulation Technique) process.

What I learned so far. There are so many things I learned so far, especially about grit; a trait that I haven’t heard very often. I discovered what having grit means, the importance of it, and how to develop it to succeed & survive in life (particularly in Generasi GIGIH 2.0).

How I learned so far. Just like how the title of this article is written, I learned by applying the QFT (Question Formulation Technique) that I found out from the soft skills class at Generasi GIGIH 2.0 by Yayasan Anak Bangsa Bisa & GoTo program. Besides, I dug deeper by surfing the internet; reading blogs, and watching YouTube videos about grit.

My conclusion about the statement. After the process of QFT (Question Formulation Technique), from my point of view, I can conclude that the statement “Grit is the most important trait to survive in Generasi GIGIH (or life)” is a good point. I absolutely agree with it! I think grit surely is the most important trait to survive in Generasi GIGIH (or life) because having grit means we have courage and resilience that could lead to success!

It’s such a long, full of new insights and discoveries journey of doing the QFT (Question Formulation Technique) process, isn’t it? I think it’s best to wrap up this article with how Duckworth summarizes grit well in her TED talk:

Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it’s a marathon, not a sprint.
