A NEWPORT man’s violent outburst saw two men punched in the head as a fight spilled into a garden
Steven Tunney, of St James Street, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday (January 4).
The 47-year-old admitted two counts of assault by beating, on July 14, 2021.
Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court his two victims had been at an address with Tunney at the time of the incident.
She said the three individuals had been at the property for approximately one hour and had been consuming alcohol.
Ms Miller said one of the victims had been entertaining children at the address when Tunney became angry and aggressive, as he didn’t like the way the victim was talking to his grandchildren.
Ms Miller said the children were taken upstairs, and did not witness the ensuing assaults.
She said Tunney launched at one of the victims, punching him in the face twice.
Ms Miller said Tunney continued to rain punches down on him, and the fight spilled into the garden.
The court heard the second victim tried to intervene, and Tunney punched him in the head and pushed him to the floor.
Ms Miller said Tunney eventually fled and the police were called.
Jim Osborne, defending, said Tunney regretted his actions on the day, but had taken exception to one of the victims hitting his grandchild.
He said Tunney knows he shouldn’t have hit out, and was suffering with mental health issues at the time — recently diagnosed as bipolar disorder.
Mr Osborne said Tunney had lost his job following a recent operation on his stomach, and was now on benefits.
Tunney saw his case adjourned to January 31, and a pre-sentence probation report was ordered.
He was granted unconditional bail.
