PLANS for an 80-bedroom care home have been approved by councillors.

The care home, which is intended to be a dementia specialist one, was given the green light by Oxford City Council’s planning committee.

The committee unanimously approved the proposals close to the junction of Jack Straw’s Lane and Marston Road.

Kerry Dearden, deputy chief executive of The Orders of St John Care Trust, told the committee: “The plan is for the home to be a dementia specialist home, it’ll be the first dementia specialist home we’ll have in Oxfordshire.

“In addition to that, we’ll be providing respite care and support to individuals.”

Oliver Neagle, an agent on behalf of the application, added: “The provision of 80 care rooms would equate to releasing 44 homes back into the local housing market.”

A council report on the three-floor care home states: “The design of the development has been subject of a number amendments to reduce the height of the third floor and roof sections of the building, particularly as perceived from Marston Road, alongside amendments to the massing of the building reducing the building’s scale and prominence.

“The design has been developed with reference to ensuring the scale and building heights are sensitive to the context of the surrounding built form.”
