To find out which DIY projects or jobs people have been struggling with the most in the last two years, Toolstation analysed DIY-related searches which has increased by a total of 14 percent between 2019 and 2021. According to the research, how to bleed a radiator came out on top, with Britons confused about how to correctly and safely bleed one.
Toolstation spoke to Mark Biles, Operations Director at M & M Mechanical Services to find out how to tell when a radiator needs bleeding and how to do so.
He explained: “You should look to bleed your radiator every few weeks in the winter because cold spots can appear at the top of the radiator which is evident of air lock in the radiator.
“If you don’t bleed them, then air can travel round the system and cause issues with flow rate and potentially lead to rust over time.”
Toolstation found that in the last two years, the most searched for DIY query was how to bleed a radiator, topping more than 500,000 searches.

“One by one, start at the lowest radiator and gently open the bleed valve, using a cup and bleed key.
“Have a paper towel to wipe off any excess drops.
“Continue opening until water is present and all air has left the radiator.
“Then close the valve and repeat the process on each radiator in the house.”
Damon Culbert, spokesperson for the company, explained: “There has been a sharp increase in the number of radiator cleaning videos featuring ‘trendy’ anti-bacterial cleaning products such as Fabulosa and Zoflora products mixed with boiling water to pour through radiator fins.
“Antibacterial products, especially aerosols and sprays should never be used on a radiator.
“In this instance that they were, the radiator would need to be fully cold – a detail that is not shown in the TikTok trend.
“If these products are used on a radiator when it is not cool then there is a huge fire hazard and risk of a potential explosion.
“The chemicals in a lot of these popular cleaners will react to heat in a very bad way, and they should in no circumstances be used on a heat source.”
According to the expert, the best way to clean a radiator is to use the cool setting on a hairdryer to blow out any dust or cobwebs.
