My name is Kurt, I’m a young library scientist, working on the applications and technology side of the industry. Our mission is to advance literacy in communities worldwide and provide libraries with the products and services they need to do so. Helping bring a little light through literacy goes a long way.

Librarianship has taught me many valuable skills and general knowledge, one of the most important being how much I don’t know. The more I acknowledge this and lean into my own ignorance, the more I am pulled into learning and full comprehension. Learning isn’t only about skill building, making more money, or getting a new job, it’s a lifestyle and mindset that, if you want, can be embraced. The beautiful cherry on top is the internet, and your local library, beckoning you to tap into this endless reservoir of knowledge.

The reason I’m writing this is simple, I have received some benefits from the websites, platforms, and podcasts below in some way, and you can too. One of the reasons I enjoy learning is because it lures me into a mission bigger than myself, and I can reflect on that for fuel and motivation. Additionally, I’m searching for resources and online communities. Please drop a comment or reach out to me on LinkedIn with what, where, and how you’re growing and learning in your professional career! (:

Unparalleled to any other time in history, we have access to more information than ever before. There’s always more to know, but how will you use it to bring a positive impact to the people in your circle, your new app, your colleagues, or your company? Call it whatever you want: growth mindset, lifelong learners, crazy nerds, etc… Regardless, starting from the beginning to the end of the day, it’s up to each of us to try to learn and bring positive impact no matter the circumstances.

Finding resources on the internet can be a love-hate relationship. How do we vet the quality, ensure no bias, and stay disciplined to follow through with our newly found resources? Well, it’s a bit of a dance, avoiding algorithmic echo chambers requires awareness and personal responsibility. I’ve never been a good dancer, but I enjoy the process and journey and find that I have more to be grateful for each day. A new day is a gift, open the gift, make the most of it and do something awesome. I’ll be the first to admit when I’m wrong, if I’m aware of it, this happens a lot. If I don’t admit my failure to myself or others, I would stunt my own growth. Remember, all good things take time, and iteration, after iteration, and then some more iteration.

Whenever you start something new it seems so exciting, it’s open-ended. Like a new song from one of your favorite artists — how’s it gonna end?! Well, like a book, we can’t expect to understand the end if we haven’t read the first chapter. Don’t expect to know in one hour, day, month, year, or even ten, expect the process. Running towards the unknown, like a sailor out at sea surrendering to the waves, bobbing up and down, all while facing the waters with joy and grit. This encapsulates a tinge of ambiguity, and sometimes we’ll have to let go of our ego and move forward with grace.

I don’t want to take up too much of your time or attention — here are the resources I want to share. Additionally, I challenge you, to go find a book that pulls you in and makes you forget about that pesky phone or TV show. Distractions can wait, your education and career can’t. We all need you, to be the best you.

Disclaimer: I realize everyone may not like and or benefit from these resources, if that is the case, please let me know what you are benefitting from so that I can grow with you.
