The world of Marvel 2099 is a chaotic futuristic setting. Having been revisited and reinvented multiple times over the years, there’s always some new event that draws the spotlight back to the setting. But the latest event might be a great way to introduce some new blood into the old concept.
Spider-Man 2099: Exodus Alpha (by Steve Orlando, Paul Fry, Neeraj Menon, and VC’s Joe Caramagna) revealed that a Cosmic Garden is growing on Earth thanks to a dead Celestial. This set the stage for the story’s overarching arc and gave the creators of the series the perfect means to introduce plenty of new characters and concepts.

Spider-Man 2099: Exodus reintroduced readers to Miguel O’Hara, the Spider-Man of Marvel 2099. A protector of Nueva York, Spider-Man has found himself increasingly dealing with members of the Cabal; a mysterious group that has taken down the Avengers and asserted themselves as above the law. Spider-Man’s investigation ended up discovering that the Cabal used a magnetokinetic array to draw a stellar-mass onto a collision course with the Earth.
After it crashed into the Ontario region, Miguel and his AI assistant Lyla turn to Ghost Rider of the era for help in hacking into a stolen Cabal hard drive. It turned out that the cosmic object was actually Jovion the Enactor, one of the Celestials. After being killed, the Cabal stations pulled on a “bullet” within the cosmic being, causing it to crash into Earth. After it landed, the cosmic energies within spread to the surrounding area, turning it into a uniquely cosmic garden. This could have the potential to change the future of humanity and the entire universe.
This Celestial Garden is a terrific idea to introduce to the world of 2099. As revealed in the core-Marvel Universe, a Celestial bleeding into the Earth can result in evolution on a massive scale, setting the stage for new heroes and powerhouses. The Cosmic Garden could empower any number of characters, and give creators an easy way to introduce a host of new 2099 characters. This could allow for a reinvigorating rush of characters, setting the stage for new 2099 versions of mutants, Inhumans, or any other kind of superpowered beings.
The Cabal’s desire to lay claim on the land also resulted in a massive bounty being placed on the region, with whoever claims it for the Cabal earning a place among their ranks. O’Hara predicted this will bring out scores of desperate criminals or ruthless killers, each of whom will put themselves between him and the Cosmic Garden. This is the perfect opportunity to reintroduce or establish a new batch of villains who could appear in 2099 going forward. It could also help flesh out how things currently operate in the 2099 timeline, which has gone through a number of reinventions and endings over the years.
All in all, a new Cosmic Garden powered by a fallen Celestial is a perfect development for the 2099 world. It’s a great and straightforward way to set up new characters and introduce new powers while giving all the established characters a big enough event to turn their attention towards. It could easily serve as the driving factor for the Exodus storyline and will help repopulate the setting. The Cosmic Garden is a terrific idea, and one hopes that the creators behind Spider-Man 2099: Exodus can mine for plenty of new concepts and characters.
