A woman has been charged with a number of offences including four counts of common assault and three counts of ill-treating or neglecting a patient.

Police say that the 50-year-old was arrested in the Coleraine area on 4th July and is due to appear at Coleraine Magistrates Court on 1st August 2022.

The alleged offences occurred between April and June this year at a private care home in Coleraine.

Responding to a query submitted by us, a Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA) spokesperson said;  “In June 2022, in line with legislation, the management of a care home in Coleraine notified RQIA of incidents of alleged misconduct by a staff member.

“RQIA is satisfied that the management of this home acted appropriately to safeguard its residents, in liaison with the Northern HSC Trust and PSNI.  The safety and wellbeing of all those living in care homes is of paramount importance to RQIA, and we continue to monitor this home through our regulatory powers.”

A statement for the Northern Health and Social Care Trust read: “The PSNI is the lead agency in relation to this matter and we have no comment to make.”

As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

We have contacted the private care home, however, they are yet to respond.
