STREAKS- A WAY FORWARD

So far we have discussed how streaks are used in personal development, and the relative positives and negatives. In this post I hope to encourage you that ‘dropping the ball’ occasionally might actually be a good thing.

I don’t know about you but for me, even despite good attention to routines, every day is different. There is a good chance that I won’t be in the right mindset to do a certain task or activity, so I find it beneficial to build in a bit of flexibility. This is what happened with the Duolingo- it had, in retrospect, become a chore. I was only doing it to keep the streak going, and less for the joy of learning.

Building in gaps from time to time can actually be of benefit in your learning, and actually comes from sound learning principles. The acronym ‘AGES’ represents the ingredients needed for long-term learning. Attention- you need to be focussed on the activity with minimal distraction. Generation- experience the new information in a way that is of benefit to you. This is where individual preferences for people who prefer to learn visually or auditory can come in. Emotion- there has to be an emotional connection with the material to maximise learning and persistence. Spacing- revisiting the information at intervals over time is the most efficient way to make the learning ‘stick’.

So spacing is ultimately of benefit to you when learning. It gives the new information or activity a chance to sink in, and for the brain to process.
