Interested in becoming a digital nomad but don’t know if you have what it takes? Read on.

Being able to travel the world all while earning a living working remotely via the Internet looks like the perfect work/life balance.

On Instagram, you may see digital nomads working from the beach, or a pool or a really cool coworking space. On the weekends, they are wandering around rice terraces in Bali or sipping cocktails from the rooftops of Lisbon.

If you’re thinking of ditching your 9–5 and becoming a digital nomad, you might wonder what it takes to become one. While the freedom and flexibility allows you to live life to the fullest, you do have to actually work to earn money to fund this lifestyle.

As someone who has been living as a digital nomad for the last 9 years, I’ve found that the most important quality that a person can have is to be self-disciplined.

Fortunately, self-discipline, like everything else in life, is a practice that can be fine-tuned.

1. Identify Your Goals

Your main goal is to live as a digital nomad, but what are your small, everyday goals? It could be the number of hours you work per week or the amount of money you earn. Perhaps you’d like to always have Fridays off. Take a moment to brainstorm what is important to you and jot them down.

2. Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Reflect on your goals and be honest with yourself about your work patterns. Are you someone that’s easily distracted? Do you work better in the mornings or the evenings? Do you get fomo?

Just know that every day, there will be some cool tour, a day trip to a beautiful destination, a meetup, a birthday party or a goodbye party. Decide how much you need to work to get your goals accomplished, then commit to a social engagement.

3. Plan Out Your Weekly Schedule

Being a digital nomad gives you a lot of flexibility. Instead of working 9–5 Monday to Friday, you could enjoy a sunny Tuesday and work on a rainy Saturday. Know what’s coming up during the week, whether it’s good weather or a fun social event and plan your work schedule around it, so that you can focus on your work when you need to.

4. Create Your Perfect Workspace

Think about what kind of environment helps you feel the most productive. Working from the beach seems like a good idea, but wouldn’t you rather be swimming in the ocean? Personally, I find it to be too sandy, too hot and too distracting. I much prefer a cool, quiet place with a comfortable desk and chair.

Some digital nomads like going to a coworking space, so that they can separate their home life from their work life. Other digital nomads prefer a cafe, which is similar but more affordable, but I always worry about leaving my laptop unattended as I go to the bathroom. Others create a workspace at home, which is the most affordable option; however, others find their bed or tv too distracting.

5. Stay Healthy

Living life to the fullest can be really distracting and tiring. To be self-disciplined, you also have to take care of yourself. This means taking breaks throughout the day, eating a healthy diet, exercising, getting plenty of sleep and forming supportive friendships.

6. Measure Your Progress

At the end of each week, reflect on whether or not you’re meeting your goals. If you’re not, don’t give up! Simply rethink steps 2–5.
