“The illiterate of the 21st Century are not those who cannot read and write but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.”- Alvin Toffler

This article is centered around the concept of unlearning. Unlearning is undoubtedly one of the most important aspects of learning. A lot of people were not able to recognize the value of it because a lot of people have a wrong perspective about the word — Unlearning.

Most people consider unlearning as forgetting. But unlearning is not about forgetting, instead it is all about reducing/eliminating the influence of the lessons that are holding us back in life.

I personally believe that unlearning is more important than learning because we usually learn to evolve or to expand ourselves but if we don’t unlearn the lessons that are holding us back, we could either make very slow progress or not be able to move forward at all.

Because the lessons that are holding us back are the reasons behind our fears, bad habits, negative thoughts, and weak perspectives.

There are many wrong lessons that we learn over the years as we go through life. Those lessons could be the influence of the people around us or the influence of the situations that we have been in.

Most of us are constantly aware of what’s happening around us but most of the time we were rarely able to acknowledge what’s happening inside of us.

We are subconsciously adapting countless beliefs, perspectives, and behaviors from different people and different experiences without even spending a moment to acknowledge how they’re affecting us and our life.

So, it is important to unlearn the lessons that are holding us back in life so that we could create more space to learn new lessons that have the potential to push us forward beyond our limitations.

Now let me give you the 3 most important benefits of unlearning

1. Unlearn To Learn: When you unlearn things that are slowing you down or holding you back in your life, you create more space to learn new things that have the potential to push you forward in life. One of the most common barriers that a lot of people face after reaching a certain level in a particular field is the illusion of knowledge.

The illusion of knowledge is basically believing that we already know everything what there is to know. This kind of belief puts an end to our learning process and creates a sense of false accomplishment. It makes us less creative and over-confident in what we do.

Unlearning helps us to break through this barrier and it provides us enough space to experiment with new things, make mistakes, and learn better. Having that little extra space to explore, makes us a lot more creative in what we do and helps us to adopt new perspectives.

Through unlearning we can unlearn the habits, beliefs, and perspectives that are dragging us down in life.

Everybody is constantly focused on learning new things in order to evolve themselves to the next level but most of us are also very little focused on unlearning the old things that are holding us back and creating that little extra space to explore more in order to learn more.

2. Unlearn To Grow: As you already know, we can unlearn our habits, beliefs, and perspectives but what if I told you that we can also unlearn our limitations such as our fears and insecurities.

Our fears and insecurities are our greatest limitations that prevent us from doing the things we wanna do. So, in order to unlearn them, we must first recognize what they are. Once we recognize what they are, we can begin to unlearn them by replacing our uncertainty with awareness.

Our fears and insecurities are nothing but our evolved uncertainties. When we don’t know how to survive through something we become uncertain and the more we come across that feeling of uncertainty, the greater the chances of our uncertainty to evolve in our fears and insecurities.

So, when you replace your uncertainty with awareness, you will begin to unlearn the fears and insecurities that you have been carrying all along.

3. Unlearn To Heal: This one is my favorite. Unlearning can also help us in healing. As we go through life we all come across bad experiences that cause us pain. And sometimes that very pain could influence us to make bad decisions and lead us to bad habits, beliefs, or perspectives.

So, it’s important to heal from the pain caused by bad experiences in life. If we don’t heal from them we will begin to carry that pain and pass it on to people who are around us.

When you unlearn the things that are holding you back, you will also begin to heal from your pain and create that little extra space in your head to learn from that pain and to do better in your life.

The concept of unlearning is undoubtedly one of the most important aspects of learning that it isn’t acknowledged by a lot of people around the world yet.

The sooner you adopt the concept of unlearning, the greater your chances to learn more and outwork everybody that’s around you.
