During the worst months of the coronavirus pandemic few places were as bleak as the country’s care homes. Horrified by the prospect of hospitals being overwhelmed by Covid cases, ministers and officials moved elderly patients into care homes. Many took the virus with them, with fatal consequences. Even where homes were spared the worst, public health restrictions turned them into de facto prisons, cutting residents off from families.
While many homes did all they could to rise to the challenges, others floundered. The care sector is as under-loved and under-resourced as it is vital. This is a moral failing as well as a societal one. Care homes are often the residences of last resort. That makes it all the more important they adhere to the
