About 2,000 people went to Portland’s Lan Su Chinese Garden to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival on Saturday. The event, also known as Zhong Qiu Jie (中秋節), honors the Harvest Moon during the equinox.

The celebration, still selling tickets online and at the door, continues Sunday until 9 p.m. and includes multiple lion dances, music, vendors, food and a lantern parade.

The holiday is one of the most important in Chinese culture right next to the Chinese New Year. Similar mid-autumn celebrations take place in Japan, Korea, Vietnam and across Asia. Tickets for adults are $20. Members are $15. Youth tickets are $10, and children under 6 are free.

The public also can visit the garden daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission costs $14.

About the garden:

Portland’s Lan Su Chinese Garden, which opened in 2000, is one of the city’s most popular cultural institutions, although it has struggled in recent months amid crime in Old Town. Sixty-five Suzhou artisans built it on a full city block in Old Town’s Chinatown. The artisans moved from China and lived in Portland for over a year to complete the garden.
