The Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire planted a tree at Hemsley Walled Garden to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The gardens welcomed Johanna Ropner last week to plant a tree for The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) as part of the 2022 Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

QGC is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC will encourage planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation, which will benefit future generations.

June Tainsh, garden manager, and Phil Crabtree, chairman of trustees at the garden greeted Mrs Ropner on her arrival and gave her a brief tour of the garden.

She then planted a spring flowering ornamental cherry Prunus ‘Shogetsu’ (Blushing bride cherry) within the Orchard in front of volunteers, staff and trustees.

June Tainsh, garden manager, said: “We wanted to be a part of the QGC, as part of the community of Helmsley but also because trees are a vital part of the environment and we want to plant as diverse a range as possible to provide an environment that benefits both nature and our visitors.”

Mrs Ropner was appointed Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for North Yorkshire in 2018.

She said: “It was such an honour to plant a cherry tree at Helmsley Walled Garden, as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee” initiative.

“I am delighted to help celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s remarkable 70 years on the throne with the simple but important act of planting a tree – one that will benefit the Helmsley community and future generations for many years to come.

“I am so pleased that Helmsley Walled Garden, and our county of North Yorkshire, are playing such a significant part in commemorating Her Majesty’s extraordinary and devoted service to her people in this Platinum Jubilee year.”

Visitors to the garden can see the new planting, complete with commemorative plaque.

Helmsley Walled Garden is a 250-year-old garden, restored from dereliction and brought back to life by a dedicated group of staff and volunteers.

It welcomes 20,000 visitors a year and provides opportunities for therapeutic horticulture for all its volunteers. The garden is open every Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to last entry at 4pm (gates close at 5pm) until December 20. Entrance is £8 for adults if pre-booked, children under 16 have free entry.
