CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – More than a dozen volunteers turned out Saturday to help with planting vegetables in the Montgomery County Community Garden at Rotary Park.
They were planting some of the first seeds in the garden located next to the Wade Bourne Nature Center in the park
“We’re working on the community garden that’s designed to not only give people the opportunity to learn how to work the dirt, plant things, take care of crops, and also have access to nutritious food they may not have access to,” said Katie Netti, the Montgomery County Parks and Recreation natural resource and program manager.
Netti added that the goal is to not only teach people how to grow their own crops, but to teach simple recipes for things they can make with the things they will grow in the 11,000-square-foot garden.
Netti said they are starting with lettuce, radishes, beets and parsnips, and they are trying to avoid the use of chemicals and fertilizers to keep the crop as natural as possible. Herbs are also being grown in raised garden beds.
Right now, the food will go to those volunteers helping to raise the crops, as well as local 4-H, Clarksville Christian Academy and their Agriculture-Science program, and the Girl Scouts.
The Community Garden was made possible with a $12,900 Community Challenge Grant awarded to Montgomery County by AARP. The grant covers all of the tools and supplies needed for planting winter crops, including raised mobile garden beds.
