Volunteers in a south Hereford community are coming together to produce a mural to brighten up a public space.

A wall in the Hunderton community garden, in the South Wye area of Hereford is undergoing a colourful makeover.

The mural features many Herefordian elements and includes apple orchards, the Broomy Hill Water Tower and the face local icon Tom Preedy, who used to guide people across the river Wye from Hunderton on a hand ferry in the early 20th century.

Artist and mural painter Tom Cousins said that the design is very much a collaboration.

He said: “We’ve got all the community involved, kids and adults have all chipped in with great ideas, most of which we are incorporating into the design.

“It’s a real eclectic mix, from traditional Herefordshire scenes, to superheroes, cartoon characters and even a dinosaur.”

Coun Kevin Tillett added that the only slight objection they had to producing the artwork was that the painted on goalposts on the wall had to stay.

He said: “Kids have been coming here to kick a a ball about and play for years so we are keeping the goalposts and incorporating that into the design.

“It’s been great working with everyone on this and we hope it will help reinforce this area as a place where the whole community can socialise.”
