Local plastering firm, Durrant & Daughter, have just helped finish a nine day DIY SOS Big Build to renovate ’The Ranch’ Youth Centre and Adventure Playground in Southmead, Bristol.
During the build, Jon and Lottie Durrant helped with the plastering of the youth centre. Lottie was shown how to apply magnetic plaster by Paul Mulinganie, a Master of the Worshipful Company of Plasterers and a demonstrator for British Gypsum. Jon and Lottie also worked directly on the tools with DIY SOS’ Plasterer, Chris Fradiani, to help convert a shipping container into a music studio.
During the nine days the Father and Daughter team also helped with clearing an area and making a deck, helped re-build a wall, stripped the render off a wall that was in a dangerous condition, and built a fire pit in the new Forest School area. They also helped the Production Team with materials, tools, making sure the site was ready for the next trade, and even helping the Interiors Team build sofas late into the night.
Jon said: “It was an amazing experience to be part of. There was a great atmosphere on site, with everyone helping each other to get jobs completed. The excitement of the kids as they lined up to use the park and the youth centre for the very first time made all the hard work and late nights very worthwhile.”
Speaking to BBC Radio Bristol, DIY SOS Presenter, Nick Knowles said about the build: “I’m over the moon at what’s been done for the community. Over the moon at the number of people that came out, not only from Bristol, but from all over the country to make the change.
“Over the moon for the young people of this area, for who not a lot of good happens and now they will genuinely believe that people care and that’s a really important thing when you’re young.”
One of the children at the celebration said the site had gone from “zero to an absolute straight ten.”Another said: “I was really sad about the vandalism, but now it’s even better than it was before.”
After the build, Jon and Lottie asked if they could take home a hard hat that had been signed by all the Presenters and Designers – but this is not just fan memorabilia – the hat will be put into the raffle as a prize for Lizzie’s Soup Run, a local organisation that helps people who are homeless. There is a wide range of prizes, with the signed hard hat being one of them!
Tickets are £1 each and can be purchased via: 07792 749339 or via Facebook or Instagram @Lizzie’s Soup Run. The draw will take place on 15th December. Keep an eye on The Journal over the coming weeks for more on this.
The DIY SOS episode is due to air in Spring 2022.
