Plans have been submitted that, if granted, would see an area of Dobbies Garden Centre near Chesterfield turned into a vet’s surgery.
The changes would see a vacant area of the Barlborough centre transformed into the surgery including a number of consultation rooms, a main reception and a number of other rooms to help care for sick animals.
Under the proposal, submitted to Bolsover District Council’s planning department, the facility would also be able to house poorly dogs and cats in separate wards, with the cat ward being used for felines as well as exotic animals.

Planning documents, seen by Derbyshire Live, show the front of the unit would be transformed with a main entrance and glass windows installed to the right-hand side of the unit, a marked difference from what is there now, which is currently just an exterior wall.
The new surgery would use the extensive parking already available at the garden centre and no information about additional staffing numbers has been included in the planning application.
If permission is granted the new facility would be housed on the left-hand side of the building’s main entrance with opening times suggesting it would be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Further information about what facilities the vets would offer include an isolation room, central/surgical area, medical theatre, dental suite, X-ray department and laboratory. It would also have its own on-site pharmacy, three consultation rooms and a large reception area.
There would also be two grass areas at the front of the building, looking out on the car park.
Plans were submitted before Christmas and a decision is expected by mid-February 2022.
