Sunderland’s match with Plymouth Argyle at the Stadium of Light this weekend will not be subject to the new ‘Plan B’ rules on Covid-19.
The Government announced new measures on Wednesday evening to combat the growing number of Covid-19 cases in the UK.
These involve vaccine passports, a return to working from home and more wearing of masks.
From Friday, face coverings will become compulsory in most public indoor venues, such as cinemas, theatres and places of worship.

However, Sunderland have confirmed that the rules will not come into place for this weekend’s fixture at the Stadium of Light, although they will be in affect for the home match with Sheffield Wednesday later this month.
A statement from the club read: “Following the Government announcement on Wednesday regarding ‘Plan B’, new protocols are set to be in place for supporters attending matches at the Stadium of Light.
“The new measures are expected to come into effect at the Stadium of Light on Thursday 30 December when Sunderland AFC host Sheffield Wednesday in Sky Bet League One.
“Supporters are advised that Saturday’s game against Plymouth Argyle will NOT be subject to new protocols.
“However, fans are encouraged to continue following public health guidance and wear a face covering on public transport and in crowded areas to reduce the spread of the virus.
“Measures are expected to be in place when Sunderland travel to Ipswich Town on Saturday 18 December and Arsenal on Tuesday 21 December.
“SAFC remains in dialogue with the EFL and the local authorities and further information will be communicated in due course.”
